Why You Never Understood Biomass Correctly

A New Definition

Just last week, 120 environmental organizations from all over the world criticized the “biomass madness”. The burning of wood in power plants in order to generate heat and electricity damages the climate, forests, biodiversity and people and prevents the transition to clean energy. The protection and restoration of Earth’s forests is a solution to climate change – instead of deforestation.

The definition of the term biomass is actually the mass of living biological organisms in a given area or ecosystem at a given time. Many only know the term from biomass heating. However, “biomass” can refer to species biomass, which is the mass of one or more species, or to community biomass, which is the mass of all species in the community. Biomass may include microorganisms, plants or animals.

In 2015, Europe imported more than 4 million tons of wood pellets from forests in the United States and wrote them off as “renewable energy”. The burning of wood biomass was initially considered a “renewable” energy on the idea that if you plant at least as many trees as you burn the process is carbon neutral. But until those trees grow back to full size in several decades and to bind carbon again, carbon emitted still contributes to global warming in the here and now. Thus, burning trees for energy is not carbon neutral.

Rainforest Under Massive Attack

Tropical rainforests in South America and Asia are under massive threat as logging is the opposite of climate protection. The expansion and intensification of deforestation vastly diminish forest ecosystems, damage biodiversity and soils, and stifle the capacity of forests to provide drinking water, flood control and clean air. The transformation of forests and other ecosystems into industrial monocultures for the production of biomass cause particular damage.
